Considered an Art Deco masterpiece, Asheville City Hall was designed by North Carolina native and renowned architect, Douglas Ellington. The design, Ellington noted, was “an evolution of the desire that the contours of the building should reflect the mountain background,” referring to the beautiful natural scenery surrounding City County Plaza. The building was completed in 1928. Other Asheville landmarks designed by Ellington include First Baptist Church, S & W Cafeteria, and Asheville High School.
